Be Brave

There are times that you may feel afraid.  Do you let that fear hold you back?  Confident people are brave.  By confronting their fears, they grow as people, gain new experiences, and become stronger individuals.

What are you afraid of?  Maybe you have been wanting to ask your crush out on a date, but you’re scared of rejection.  Perhaps you want to try out for the soccer team, but you are afraid you will make a fool of yourself.  It’s possible you want to write a book, but you’re too afraid to show anyone your work.

Although Mandy McKinney is the most popular girl in school, she is afraid that she is not good enough.  She worries that any wrong move she makes will negatively effect her social status.  She is falling in love with her good friend, but she doubts that he feels the same.

Everyone is stunned when Mandy dyes her blonde hair to red.  She was finally brave enough to do something that she always wanted to do, without letting fear of what everyone else will think stop her.  Now will she be able to find the strength to tell the boy she loves how she feels?

Mandy’s twin sister, Brianna, has never had any luck when it comes to dating.  All the boys have always used her to try to get closer to her beautiful sister, and then dumped her.  When Brianna finally meets the right guy for her, she is terrified of getting her heart broken again.

Will Brianna find the courage to let down her walls and fall in love?

If you don’t take the chance, you never know what you will miss out on!  So go ahead and ask your crush out on a that date.  Try out for the soccer team!  Stand up in front of a crowd and read your writing!  If there is something you want but you’ve been letting fear hold you back, take a deep breath and go for it!  Remember:  you miss 100% of the shots that you don’t take.

Be a GENUINE friend

The first step is choosing true friends (link back to other post).  The next step is being a genuine friend yourself.  When your friends are on top, it’s easy to be around them.  But what about when they are down and out?  Maybe your best friend is depressed and isn’t acting herself lately.  Should you turn your back on her?  Absolutely not!  This is when she needs your the most!

In the novel, In Shadows of Magic, Mandy McKinney is the most popular girl in school.  She’s beautiful, athletic, and dating the most desirable guy in school.  But the truth is that she’s a witch, and that she has used her magic to achieve all of this.  Mandy always agonizes about if people like her, and does whatever she can to fit in.  Every day she wonders if her friendships are real, or if she has used her magic to bewitch everyone, including her hot boyfriend.  When one of Mandy’s “friends” turns against her, she worries that all of her friends will.

Mandy’s twin sister, Brianna, doesn’t fit in with the popular crowd.  She feels rejected by her own twin sister.  But she has lots of fun with her true friends.  Brianna has been best friends with Eva since pre-school, and they stand by each other through thick and thin.  Brianna doesn’t have to worry about appearances with her friends.  They can be goofy and have fun!

After choosing true friends, be a genuine friend to them!  Stand by them during tough times.  Stand up for your friends when others are plotting against them.  Even when everyone else turns against you, a genuine friend will be by your side!

Will Mandy’s friends and boyfriend turn against her during her hard times?  Will Brianna and Mandy reconcile, and realize that they are more the same than they are different?

Set Goals, Work Hard, and Be Proud of Your Accomplishments!

Mandy McKinney appears to have it all.  She’s the most beautiful girl in school, dates the hottest guy in school, hangs out with the popular crowd, and is the star of the softball team.  But Mandy has a secret.  She is a witch, and she uses her magic to achieve all of this.  Since Mandy did not work hard for her accomplishments, she is not proud of herself.  It takes hard work, effort, and genuine achievements to develop real confidence in yourself.  Despite her outside appearance, Mandy feels sad, lonely, and insecure on the inside.

 

Mandy’s twin sister, Brianna, wishes that everything could come to her effortlessly like it does for Mandy.  Brianna has worked hard to develop true friendships through trust and loyalty.  She isn’t accepted by the popular crew.  Boys date her to try to get closer to Mandy, then dump her.  Brianna isn’t any good at sports.  She is learning to play the guitar, but she doesn’t seem to be any good at that either.  After Brianna and her friends create a band, they decide to sign up for the Battle of the Bands.  Brianna worries that she will mess up and ruin their performance, even though she practices hard every day.  

 

 

What is your goal?  Maybe you want to run a marathon, write a book, score straight As, get into college, or make the Varsity softball team.  If you set a realistic goal and work hard, you can achieve it!  When you do, the feeling of accomplishment and the spike in your self esteem is priceless.

 

Will Mandy ever find the courage to strive for real accomplishments and true friendships?  Will Brianna ever meet a guy that will like her more than her twin sister?  Will all of Brianna’s hard work pay off?  Will she rock out at The Battle of Bands?

Choose TRUE Friends

Admit to YOUR Mistakes

We all make mistakes, especially as teenagers.  Sometimes mistakes can cost us our friends.  Sometimes mistakes can cause others to look at us in a negative light.  There’s nothing wrong with making mistakes, as long as we can admit to and learn from them.  When we are able to learn from our mistakes, we grow as people and develop real confidence.

 

Brianna McKinney makes a lot of mistakes throughout the course of the novel, In Shadows of Magic.  She is envious of her own twin sister.  She desires her sister’s boyfriend.  Every boy uses her to get closer to her sister, and then dumps her.  Her jealousy drives her to take action.  

 

 

 

After Brianna makes some bad choices, she loses all of her friends.  She realizes the error of her ways, and wants to make things right.  In the midst of all this, Brianna finally meets an amazing guy and falls in love.  

 

 

 

Then, she realizes that her mistakes have even greater consequences than she thought.  Her own and her sister’s lives may be at stake.  Her new boyfriend is the only one who may be able to help her when facing dark and powerful forces.  But in order to help her, she must tell him everything.  Will she be able to admit all of her mistakes to her new love?  If she does, will he still want to be with her?

Date Who YOU Want

When you’re in high school, it always feels like a struggle between doing what YOU want and doing what others will think is cool.  If you don’t date the hottest guy, hang out with the coolest girls, and wear the trendiest clothes, your ranking in the social hierarchy can take a nosedive.  But when you’re really confident in yourself, you can do whatever YOU want.  You never worry about what anyone else thinks.  This includes who you choose to date.

Mandy McKinney is torn between two guys.  Chad has muscles, dimples, a gorgeous face, and superior athletic abilities.  Even though he can have any girl in school that he wants, he is completely in love with Mandy.  Mandy and Chad are the perfect power couple; beautiful, talented, and seemingly perfect for each other.
